CIRCUS SAVAGE Chapter VII

At the close of the first decade of the 2000s, Lawrence Jordan wove together a vast river of image and sound from unused film material piled-up in his studio since 1952. In essence, this is his visual autobiography, including clips from strange and unusual appropriated footage, outtakes from many of his films as well as material from uncompleted projects.
For the seventh of twelve chapters, covering reels nineteen to twenty-one, we briefly return to the international expeditions of Joanna McClure (explored in some detail throughout Chapter VI) before the film-collage expands to chaotic proportions. Excerpts from the otherwise uncompleted and unreleased THE MOVIE CRITIC (1963), an absurd mixture of live-action and animation, are followed by random source-layers from OUR LADY OF THE SPHERE (1968), PINK SWINE (1963) and other films of the era along with a previously unused card for the TRANSMIGRATIONS OF THE MOON and a crawl from "Caryatid" and the "Erythraean Sibyl" to the "moon sheep" (whatever that happens to be). The inverted titles from THE MIRACLE OF DON CRISTOBAL (2008) and a note-to-self ("make this shot pure white (no tint)") opens a sequence of found-footage and cut-out animation lifted from a compilation film, concluding with moments revisited from the earlier chapters, intercut with other title-cards from the collaborative Jordan / Jess FINDS OF THE FORTNIGHT (1960 / 1980) and accompanied by the voice of Orson Welles narrating THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER (1977).
