CIRCUS SAVAGE Chapter VI

52m
At the close of the first decade of the 2000s, Lawrence Jordan wove together a vast river of image and sound from unused film material piled-up in his studio since 1952. In essence, this is his visual autobiography, including clips from strange and unusual appropriated footage, outtakes from many of his films as well as material from uncompleted projects.
In the sixth chapter, consisting of reels sixteen to eighteen, appears another "End" in reverse. If reversed, might it represent a new beginning? Admittedly, this faux-conclusion is followed by many titles back-to-front, including additional sequences from THE DIVINE COMEDY—uncompleted, although these themes were later revisited in INFERNO (2014)—and VISIONS OF A CITY (1957 / 1978). After a relatively brief springtime return-visit to Jordan's backyard garden in Petaluma, the majority of this midway chapter is preoccupied with outtakes from the H.D. TRILOGY, inspired by the writings of American expatriate poet Hilda Doolittle (who, herself, was largely influenced by Ancient Greek writings and mythology). The primary foundation is THE GROVE (1993), the second in the trilogy. Once again, Joanna McClure is our optimal guide for these assorted travels.
